Please enjoy this specially curated list of some of my favourite albums. It's largely prog metal, but there's some funky stuff in there.

Best enjoyed off-shuffle, but I'm not a cop so do what you want.

My current hyperfixation is the album listed below, please check it out.

Hope you like WEIRD!

Can you hear the Signal heard THROUGHOUT SPACE?

My fangirling for this album is now UNCONTAINABLE. I am simply forcing this work of art on those of you unlucky enough to stumble upon it.

If you're like me and you grew up listening to Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds you might also be cursed with a unique (read: weird) love of the prog rock Space Opera.
While these days I lean more towards metal, I can't deny that album had a significant impact on my taste in music.

The Signal Heard Throughout Space tickles that part of me that yearns for the strangely complex sci-fi melodies that remind me of the Jeff Wayne album.

It's difficult to solidly call this album metal. It is genre-defying and chaotic by design but bursting with pure distilled emotion and creativity. The songs shift from epic to psychedelic with lots more in-between. The vocals range from low screams to falsetto melodies and the performace is inspiring. It's equal parts goofy, sinister, epic and sad and IT NEEDS APPRECIATION.

Very rarly do the songs have a consistent melody or chorus. I understand that's a flaw to some. It's definitely not catchy and I wouldn't play this at a party (unless I wanted to annoy people) but I am totally drawn to the weird chaos that is packed within.

If you plan on listening I've linked it in my music recommendations, I HIGHLY RECOMMED active listening to the album from beginning to end in a single sitting.

Have a few drinks, smoke some pot, put on your best pair of headphones and sit in a dark room. It's only 1 hour. Thats less than the length of a single movie.

In a way, this was just an opportunity for me to scream into the void about an album I can't get out of my head. The real reason I'm writing this is becaue I want it to get the love and admiration it deserves.

The intrepid captain of the starship Cygnus-1 has taken me on a jorney that has given me an uncontrollable craving for more.

I truly hope the people behind this album are working on new stuff.

Between the Buried and Me - Automata I & II

Favourite Track: The Proverbial Bellow

These 2 short albums are the quintissential BTBAM albums for me. They define everything I love about this band and the fucked up chaos they brew. I usually always listen to both of them back-to-back and I highly recommend to people who are into heavy prog.

Ne Obliviscaris - Exul

Favourite track: Equus

This album is a masterwork of clashing vocals and instumentals. The combination of metal rhythms and haunting violin give the whole album a powerful orchestral feel.

Nospūn - Ozai

Favourite Track: Jormungand

This album is a total remake of an older album by the same band. It's groovy, powerful and super fun to sing to.

Resuscitate - Immortality Complex

Favourite Track: Reclamation

An incredible project from a one person band with a cameo from Max Mobarry. This album is dark and gritty sounding with insane instumentals and vocals.

Native Construct - Quiet World

Favourite Track: Chromatic Abberation

This is a classic album beloved by many in the prog metal community. It's an emotional exploration of obsession and its consequences. The instrumentals are tight and chaotic and the vocals are gorgeous.

Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace

Favourite Track: Mute

It was genuinely difficult to pick a favourite track for this one. This album made waves in the prog community when it was released in 2024. I'm very happy I got the opportunity to see them live, and I hope Caligula's Horse are planning on coming to Perth again.

Toehider - I Have Little to No Memory of These Memories

Favourite Track: N/A

This album is pitched as one 47 minute track. Like a lot of Toehider stuff it's a quirky space opera that blends many genres and styles. At one point in my life I could sing this all the way through without missing a lyric. There's also a bird.

Voyager - V

Favourite Track: Hyperventilating

I fell in love with this band when I saw them open for Twelve Foot Ninja in 2018. As much as I love TFN, I think Voyager stole the show for me. Hands down one of the best live performances I've seen to date. They also live in the same city as me, which makes me smile :3

Osaka Punch - Mixed Ape

Favourite Track: How We Operate

I randomly discovered this band on shuffle in 2018 and my life was forever changed. This band is groovy, flamboyant and SO MUCH FUN.

I've never had the chance to see them live but I'm sure they're far more fun on stage.

Twelve Foot Ninja - Silent Machine

Favourite track: Silent Machine

Twelve Foot Ninja is intense and forceful, but the singer's ability to seemlessly switch between delicate melodies and grunty growling is amazing.

Thank You Scientist - Terraformer

Favourite Track: Anchor

I never knew how much I enjoyed blending guitar and brass until I first heard this album.

Thank you, Thank You Scientist!

My Taste

Progressive metal, progressive rock, power metal, djent, alt, punk, funk, psychedelic rock, jazz fusion

And basically everything else weird and wonderful

I lean heavily towards electric guitar and distortion, but like both clean and screaming vocals, whacky rhythms and appreciate music I can sing along to
